Telemetry for sewage and storm water pumping stations
Wet-well levels, pump status, run hours and faults from every SPS and drainage pumping station, with overflow and flood events logged against rainfall.
Unmanned stations, accountable operation
Sewage and drainage pumping stations are spread across a city and often visited only when something has failed. A blocked pump or a power trip is discovered when the wet well overflows into a street or a drain.
Nebulotix RTUs monitor wet-well level, pump status and power at each station, raise alarms before overflow, and record every event. Drainage stations are linked to rain gauge data so performance during storms can be reviewed against the design.
What is supplied
Station RTU
Monitors level, pump run/trip status, power supply and door access, with optional remote start/stop.
Wet-well level
Ultrasonic or radar level sensor with independent float switch backup for high-high alarm.
Pump monitoring
Run hours, starts, current and fault status per pump.
Rain gauges
Tipping-bucket gauges in the drainage catchment, linked to storm pumping station records.
Control Centre
City-wide map of stations, alarms, run-hour reports and event history.
| Item | Typical configuration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Level sensing | Ultrasonic / radar | Float switch backup for HH alarm |
| Pump inputs | Run, trip, auto/manual, current | Per pump |
| Power | Mains with battery backup | Reports power failure |
| Rain gauge | Tipping bucket, 0.2 or 0.5 mm | Linked to catchment stations |
| Communication | 4G with SMS fallback | Alarms delivered without internet |
| Integration | Modbus · MQTT | Existing PLC panels where present |
Typical values. Final selection follows site survey, hydraulic review and the project specification.
Functions
Early overflow warning
High-level alarms with time to spill based on inflow rate.
Pump health
Run hours, start counts and current trends to plan maintenance before failure.
Power monitoring
Grid and DG status, phase loss and voltage alarms.
Flood event logs
Level, pumping and rainfall recorded together for each storm.
Operator accountability
Site visits and manual operations time-stamped.
Compliance reporting
Monthly availability and incident reports for the ULB or board.
Survey, supply, operate
Survey and design
Hydraulic review, instrument and valve placement, radio coverage study.
Supply and install
Field equipment installed, commissioned and tagged on GIS.
Operate and maintain
Remote monitoring, preventive maintenance and operator training through O&M.
Can telemetry be added to existing SPS panels?
Yes. The RTU reads pump status from auxiliary contacts or the existing PLC, and adds its own level sensor and power monitoring where needed.
How are alarms delivered?
By SMS, app notification and email, with escalation to a second contact if an alarm is not acknowledged.
Is rainfall data needed for storm pumping stations?
It is strongly recommended. Without rainfall, it is not possible to tell whether flooding came from a storm beyond design or from a station that did not perform.
